Sweet Shop - Curly Q Bowtique

Introducing my latest Sweet Shop -
Curly Q Bowtique!

Marlis owner of Curly Q Bowtique

Marlis and I went to college together, and spent lots of time in Interior Design studio.  She has always had an attention to detail, and is always extremely organized!  She would always finish her projects early.  As a bigtime procrastinator, I have always been envious!

Learn more about her and her business,
and check out the GIVEAWAY of a
$15.00 SHOP CREDIT.
Just in time for Halloween or early
Christmas shopping where you can get a cape of your choice!

 1.    What products do you make/sell?
Hair bows & flowers, Super hero capes, masks and accessories.

2.    What inspired you to start creating?
My daughter loves hair bows and I had free time, so I researched how to make them. I enjoy putting together different colors and patterns to create the bows.

I kind of fell into making capes. I made batman capes for my son's birthday party for favors. I had some extra's so I posted them on The Sweetest Memory as a guest artist. They sold so quickly, I made more and eventually opened my own etsy shop in May.  All of the other cape styles came in as style requests, so I offered those for sale also.

3.    What room do you do your creating?
My craft room and loft.

 4.    What is your favorite organization tip/ tool?
Regroup and reorganize your supplies once a week, so you don't loose track of what you have.

5.    What tip can you give others interested in making/selling similar items?
Have some stock of each item made before listing it so you can stay ahead of your orders. Especially capes and accessories before Halloween!

6.    What is your day job?
I am a stay at home mom.

7.    Describe your ideal weekend.
Having no activities planned so I can work in my yard and enjoy the fall weather or sit in front of the tv and catch up on shows.

8.  What other activities do you enjoy?
Gardening, golf, bargain shopping, hiking, camping, skiing, running, playing pool.

9.    What is your sweetest memory from childhood?
Me and my 5 brothers and sisters sitting at our kitchen counter enjoying homemade rootbeer floats.

10.    What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
Batman cape...it's what got me started making capes.

Sweet Shop - Swede13 Inspirations

Introducing my latest Sweet Shop -
Swede13 Inspirations!

Angie owner of Swede13 Inspirations

I am so inspired by Angie. She makes the loveliest things and has the most amazing Etsy shop and blog.

Learn more about her and her business, and check out the GIVEAWAY of an amazing French Inspired fleur de lis aqua easel and matted photography print of your choice.

French Inspired Fleur de Lis Easel in Aqua, 8" w x 11" h

5 x 7 Photo print of your choice, matted in black or white

1. What products do you make/sell?  My Etsy shop consists of french country, beach bungalow and farmhouse finds. I find old treasures and repurpose them. I also sell my Cottage Photography and a few of my own paintings.

2. What inspired you to start creating?  I had been in and out of local antique shops for years until I discovered Etsy. The idea of repurposing and refurbishing my vintage finds to sell online became a better fit for me. I actually started with just my photography and paintings and in January of 2010 I began selling vintage.

3. What room do you do your creating?  I have three different work spaces. My computer in the kitchen takes priority when listing items and blogging. My guest bedroom houses all of my treasures and this is where my easel is set up. The garage is where I refurbish and turn the trash into treasures! I have my paint, tools and shipping boxes all in one area and I spread my huge drop cloth out across the floor when I am having a painting day. We don't park our cars in their anymore. I actually share half the garage with my teenage boys and their home gym.

4. What is your favorite organization tip/ tool? I tend to get very side-tracked and pulled in different directions, especially working from home (the laundry, the phone, the kids!). The best tool for me is to make a to-do list and prioritize what I want to accomplish each day.

5. What tip can you give others interested in making/selling similar items?
Create things that you would purchase for yourself...pieces that you would seek out for your own home. When painting a vintage object or piece of furniture, always be sure to seal the piece with a protective finish.

6. What is your day job?  My day job...mom to three teenagers. This takes top billing in my life! I love my Etsy, painting, photography and blogging, but when they need me, I am there. I know it's only a matter of a few years and they will all be out of the house, so I treasure each day. Some days I have to remind myself of that when all I feel like is the maid, cook, chauffeur and ATM machine!

7. Describe your ideal weekend.  I love time at the beach or by the pool and luckily I get that a lot living in Florida. I also love weekends when I spend a whole Saturday at an antique fair and I come home with a car full of new treasures and I am covered from head to toe in dirt and dust. That's a good day.

8. What other activities do you enjoy?  I love to read, paint, listen to country music and drink good wine with good friends! Oh, and I love to go dancing.

9. What is your sweetest memory from childhood?  One of my sweetest memories was a youth group trip I took from Tennessee to Florida when I was in eighth grade. It moved me so much that when I returned home I was baptized in our church.

10. What is your favorite item in your shop and why?  I love all the rustic chippy goodness in the vintage treasures I come across to repurpose. Among my favorites are old shutters, vintage frames, stools and books. My favorite items to create are my cottage hooks and knobs. I like to create the weathered wood or crackled look.

Sweet Shop - My Gigi Doll

Introducing my latest Sweet Shop - I am absolutely in love with these!

Melissa owner of My Gigi Doll

Learn more about her and her business, and check out the GIVEAWAY of an amazing and adorable handmade doll or superhero doll of your choice!

1. What products do you make/sell?  I make soft dolls that are made with eco-friendly and/or all natural materials.

2. What inspired you to start creating?  I’ve always been artistic. I’ve recently discovered that fiber is my favorite medium. I love fabric and yarn made of natural fibers. My mom bought me my first sewing machine when I was 19. The first thing I made on my own was a quilt. Over the past 20 years I’ve made quilts, Halloween costumes for my kids, clothes for my daughter, dresses to raise money for clean water in Africa, doll clothes, knitted hats, felted purses, and more. I never imagined I would fall in love with making soft dolls!

3. What room do you do your creating? I make the dolls in my studio. And by that I mean I make the dolls in the dining room. We now eat in the kitchen. Sorry family!

4. What is your favorite organization tip/ tool? I am great at getting organized but terrible at staying organized. I could use a few tips myself!

5. What tip can you give others interested in making/selling similar items? The best tip I can give is to make and sell what you love. Do what you love, work hard at it and success will follow.   As for specifically making dolls, I would look online for techniques and even buy a doll making book to get started.

6. What is your day job?  I am a homeschooling mom to my 3 kids:  Jackson, 15, Nathan, 13 and Gianna (Gigi), 8. Before having kids I worked in the mortgage industry.

7. Describe your ideal weekend. My ideal weekend would include being outside somewhere green, taking an afternoon nap and hanging out and laughing with my family.

8. What other activities do you enjoy? I’m always doing different things and don’t stick with one thing for long. I like to run and knit. Coming up with new doll ideas is currently my favorite activity.

9. What is your sweetest memory from childhood? I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and on weekends and school breaks I would spend time at my dad’s farm in Oregon. I loved to explore in the woods for hours at a time. We had a tree swing that hung from an enormous oak tree that I would swing on while making up and singing songs. I love the solitude and beauty of nature.

10. What is your favorite item in your shop and why? My favorite item is the Gigi Doll. The Gigi doll is based on my daughter, Gianna. Even though I love each doll, Gigi is and will always be my favorite.

Anything else you want to share? I took my first ever sewing class two weeks ago! I was surprised at some things I didn’t know after sewing for 20 years.

I really have loved being able to donate dolls to some great causes. I got to make one for a little girl with Down's Syndrome who was undergoing treatment for Leukemia. The most special thing I think I've ever done with the dolls, though, is to make a set of sister dolls for a little girl who lost her big sister. The family is a missionary family from Canada that travels around the U.S. speaking at different churches. In February they were driving on black ice, lost control of their van and crashed. Their oldest, a 3 year old little girl, died in the accident. She left behind her mom and dad and her little sister. I was approached about making sister dolls for the little girl and I jumped at the chance. I made the dolls look like the little girls, dressed them in their favorite colors and made them an elephant and a giraffe, older sister's favorite animals. It was such a special thing for me to be able to give in this way...it truly is more blessed to give than to receive!

Introducing my latest Sweet Shop -
Kiza owner of Frog Loves Monkey.
Learn more about her and her business, and check out the GIVEAWAY of an adorable skirt or boy's lounge pants of your choice!

1. What products do you make/sell?

We do a little bit of everything. I tend to think of our product line as being family focused, and that can actually encompass quite a lot. Given our backgrounds in garment construction and the fact that I have two small children, Mom and I tend to focus on children's clothes. But my attempt to lead my own family towards more natural, good-for-us-and-good-for-the-planet, and well-made items has led to frog loves monkey branching out into personal and home items in addition to child-focused items. (Because, really, aren't the spaces that we inhabit extensions of ourselves?) Our soaps have been popular, and we've recently added sugar and salt scrubs. We make things like reusable produce and shopping bags, pot holders and decorative banners for the home. We make soft toys like felt food (which has been a BIG hit in my kid's play kitchen!) and bean bags. And we offer quite a few baby and child items: mei tai baby carriers, car sat covers, play quilts and the like. I suppose a shorter answer could have been "If we think it's awesome or something we use ourselves, we make it for the shop".

2. What inspired you to start creating?

Honestly, I can't think of a time in my life when I *wasn't* creating. When I was younger I used different medium: words, paint, music, dance - but I've always had some sort of creative outlet. I turned to sewing in my mid-twenties, when I went back to school and discovered theatre.

3. What time of day do you work best?

Hmm... That's a tricky question to answer. With my kids and their natural rhythms, it seems to work out best for me to do my mental planning early in the day, sewing in the afternoon and evening and computer work in the evenings and after they're in bed. Not that I often get to do all of that in one day, but that's where productive times seem to fall in the day.

4. What room do you do your creating?

In the dining room. Technically, my husband and I have a little office/sewing room workspace, but it's tiny. Even when it's beautifully organized, two people can't really stand in there at the same time. So when I'm doing actual work, it ends up happening in the dining room. At the moment, because we're prepping for a trunk show, I've moved the table out of the room so that we could set up our work tables.

5. What is your favorite organization tip/tool?

I'm a list maker. I don't always check my lists like I should, but the act of writing things down seems to cement them into my brain better than just trying to remember them on my own. I'm also a huge fan of clear plastic bins, which is an obsession that I'm pretty sure I inherited from my mother. Our makeshift workroom is full of clear plastic bins (nicely labeled, because that's Mom's thing), and it's great because if I can't see what fabric we have available, it might as well not even exist.

6. What tip can you give others interested in making/selling similar items?

Do your best work, and set your prices where you're comfortable. I think that a downside of our big-box consumer culture is that we, as consumers, have gotten accustomed to shoddy workmanship and really low prices. Hand crafted and hand made items are a reflection on the artist that created them and they shouldn't fall apart like cheap, mass produced crap. With that, I don't think it's fair to expect makers of handmade items to accept next to nothing for their time and talent...but I'm also a VERY firm believer that hand made should be accessible, and prices should be set fairly.

7. What is your day job?

I'm a full-time mom. My son just turned four, and my daughter is 20 months old. And these guys are BUSY.

8. Describe your ideal weekend.

Well, my husband works weekends, so our weekends are kind of like everyone else's Monday-Thursday. But an ideal bit of time would definitely be family-centered. I like it best when we're able to spend no-pressure time doing things with the kids - moseying out for a relaxed brunch, maybe a little toy store window shopping, snuggling up on the couch watching a little tv or playing in the yard until we're all covered in dirt. Taking short trips always sounds like a good thing to do but, really, I'm a homebody.

9. What other activities do you enjoy?

Hanging out with my kids. Reading, though I don't seem to have much time for it now. Cooking. Learning new and better ways to be a bit more self sufficient - gardening, canning, etc.

10. What is your sweetest memory from childhood?

I think I'd have to say the time that my sister and I spent together, when we were just us. We were SO different from one another, but always got along just beautifully with one another. (As adults, it's possible that we share a brain.) I'm older by 18 months, but was always pretty much afraid of everything. She wasn't. Even at points that we had our own bedrooms, I'd end up sleeping in her room - either on a pallet on her floor or with both of us squished into her bed - because I felt safer with her. And she let me.

11. What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

Ooo, this one's hard. I really, honestly like everything in the shop (there wouldn't be any point in making it, otherwise!), though I do tend to get infatuated with different items. I think my biggest crush at the moment would have to be our kid's lounge pants. It's really kind of easy to come up with super cute things to make for girls, but good boy's items tend to be trickier. Since my daughter models (and so, keeps) most of the clothes that we make for girls, my son often ends up getting the short end of the look-what-my-mom-made stick. But we recently introduced the lounge pants, and he absolutely loves them! I think he's super cute in them, and he likes them so much that he wears his for as long as I'll allow. Since he's got a good eye for fashion and tends to be kind of picky about his clothes, I take this as high praise!

12. Anything else you want to share?

Frog loves monkey is no longer a solo operation! My mom, Sally, has been one of my biggest supporters from day one and, especially now that we're living near one another, she's been offering more and more support. Given the amount of time and money and man hours she was volunteering, it was really kind of silly to pretend that she wasn't a vital part of the business. So, as of February, the two of us are running this show together. I couldn't be happier about it. I love getting to work so closely with my mom. I'm most likely going to remain the "face" of frog loves monkey, and I handle the website and listings and facebook and twitter and and and, but Mom has brought a lot to the table in terms of product. She has some really great ideas on expanding our line, some of which we've already acted on and some that are still in the planning stages, she's drafted some super cute patterns and she does really beautiful, detailed work.
